“The Cursed File” — When a Halloween Gift Turns Into a Cyber Trap

This Halloween, beware of the “cute” or “spooky” files that pop up online — from adorable ghost stickers to themed music or videos.
Behind those harmless-looking downloads may lurk a cyber curse waiting to unleash malware on your device.

Even if the file comes from a friend or looks trustworthy, always think before you click. Hackers often disguise malicious files as gifts, greeting cards, or free downloads during festive seasons to trick users into lowering their guard.

A single careless click can open the door to stolen data, infected systems, or even a full-blown cyberattack.

How to break the curse:

  • Double-check the file name and extension before downloading (.exe, .zip, .scr can be risky)
  • Avoid opening attachments from unknown senders
  • Keep your antivirus and system updated
  • Remember: a real gift never pressures you to “click now”

Don’t let a Halloween treat turn into a cyber nightmare.
Stay alert, stay secure, and don’t get tricked!
